The Soulcalibur series is facing a crisis, producer Motohiro Okubo said.
Soulcalibur series has been running for a long a time now, and it has gained a massive fan following since the first game released in 1995. But the latest iteration in series, Soulcalibur 6, could very well be the last, which is if it doesn’t do well according to the series’ producer.
Mothoiro Okubo, in an interview with DualShockers at Gamescom 2018 said that the series was in dire straits. Namco Bandai had little faith in the franchise. This is the reason why Soulcalibur 6 took six years to come out after the previous game in the series.
He said, “The first thing is that the IP itself of the SoulCalibur franchise had low expectations from the company. It was actually facing a crisis of maybe disappearing. It took time for me to convince the company.”
He also said that this could be the last if it doesn’t do well. The game is also the first in the frachise to be released on PC.
“We don’t want to blackmail the users by saying that it could be the last one, but as it is, yes.”
He also said that they were going all out on the series as they had nothing to lose.
“Since the SoulCalibur brand is facing a crisis, we have nothing to lose, so we just decided to do what we want to do.”
This can be seen in the fact that the game has been providing fan service by reintroducing many of the iconic characters of the franchise. When asked if that was the reason they designed sexy costumes for many of the characters, he said “we’re not trying to make the game focused on sexy characters”, but instead “we always think about how best they (costumes) can represent the characters.”
