Sega released a teaser of the new Sonic game at SXSW 2018. The company also announced a physical release for Sonic Mania.
Sega showed fans de wei at South By Southwest 2018 when they hosted a panel to announce their upcoming releases. First of all, they announced the physical release of the much loved Sonic Mania, which was a tremendous success last year. The physical version of the game will be called Sonic Mania Plus, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in summer 2018 for $29.99. Sonic Mania Plus will have additional features, such as a new encore mode and new version of the competition mode. The game will also have Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel added as playable heroes. Moreover, it will be a boxed version, with more stuff for the fans. But the big news came after this announcement, when they teased a new Sonic game. Sega also tweeted the teaser, which you can see below.

The trailer starts with the sound of an engine revving, specifically a racing engine. The trailer zooms into the headlight of a car, before finally revealing the games silhouette with an “R” clearly visible. On a closer look, it looks like the silhouette spells racing. So, it is pretty safe to assume that the game will be a racing game, like its predecessor Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The panelists did confirm that the game was not a sequel to a pre-existing game in Sonic series.
The new Sonic game comes months after rumours about the follow up to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. On being asked about further Sonic ports to iOS, a panellist replied, “We’ve stolen Christian Whitehead away” (via artstechnica). Christian Whitehead is the Sonic Mania developer who built the best iOS ports for the Sonic games. This means that we might see more retro styled Sonic games in the future.
