WWF Smackdown 18 year anniversary today!
The WWE fan in us is getting nostalgic. Ladies and Gents, it is at this day 18 years ago, that the pinnacle of every WWE video game came alive.
WWF Smackdown is the best game ever! Alright, maybe we’re over stating it a bit. However, the fact that it changed the lives of every WWE fan is unquestionable, from the low and high kicks, to the grapples which didn’t make sense.
WWF Smackdown was forged by wonky graphics and a mediocre gameplay that everyone still loves. Even though it was a little ‘off’, it was still pretty decent for that time period.
It’s one of the first games to ever develop the main stage of video game wrestling. Fans praise the game for its uniqueness and fighting style. The grapples were not as bad as it was before on WWF Attitude but like every other game, it has a downside. It’s also one of the video games that the late great THQ has created. It’s later succeeded by WWF Smackdown Know your Role which was eventually renamed to WWE Smackdown vs Raw.
WWF Smackdown Theme feels. It’s bad that it’s so good.
There is no way in Davy Jones’s locker that anyone understood what the singer said on the opening theme of the game. It’s the most weird opening themes on a wrestling video game up to date. Jim Johnston once said a statement about it.
“I did ‘sing’ one of the early Smackdown themes. I was hearing some early metal stuff and was always shocked how bad the vocals were, and that the lyrics were absolutely unintelligible. The theme I had written was in this style, and I couldn’t find a singer, so I did it myself. There are no lyrics, I just sang gibberish. I had fans contact me for a lyric sheet which, of course, I could not provide.” – WWE composer Jim Johnston
The graphics of Kane, The Rock, Stone Cold, Mankind and others were just not alright to say the least. However, it’s still one of the greatest wrestling video game franchises that made it up to WWE 2k18. Well played, WWE. What was your best moment in the WWF Smackdown matches that you had?
