Within 10 months of release, Nintendo Switch became the Fastest-Selling Home Video Game System In U.S. History.
According to Nintendo’s internal sales figures, Nintendo’s portable home console has sold nearly five million units in the United States. It is the highest total sales of video game system in the first 10 months. Nintendo Switch even knocked out Nintendo Wii holding 4 million units within the same duration.
Sales were maintained throughout the year. Hardware shortages have given consumers a hard time to lay their hands on the product, especially during the holiday season. But that didn’t hinder the sales. It even helped boost it up to more than 4.8 million units in the United States.
Reasons why Nintendo Switch holds the all-time sales record in U.S.
“It’s a whole new way to play video games, and a whole new way to think about what ‘home console’ means.” – Reggie Fils-Aimé, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America
One of the reasons why is because Nintendo of America is living up to its core proposition; a home console that you can play anytime, anywhere, with anyone, is resonating with consumers. Users can play anywhere or plug into a dock to play on a TV.
Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of Nintendo’s Switch game catalog that certainly is the real deal. Especially now that Breath of the Wild is awarded as 2017 Year of the Game by Game Awards. Super Mario also has some good reviews on its own with its massive and loyal fans. According to Nintendo, 60% of Switch owners own the new Mario game and 55% have Breath of the Wild.
Nintendo’s long-term goals include plenty of games to play. Fils-Aime said, “For calendar 2018 and beyond, our focus is the same. We need to make sure we’ve got a cadence of great content to motivate the consumer, and we’re going to continue to announce the details of those games in due time, and on a rolling basis.”
Even with the success, Fils-Aime will continue on bringing bigger development where they brought in new young developers into the scene. “We believe we’re doing an excellent job of bringing new young developers into Nintendo,” he says. Nintendo will speed up the developments and creating great content by training new recruits. Quality will remain high for long time developers who will lead the teams to make sure every content keeps up with the standards.
